Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience working in a changing organization.
  • Experience leading and mentoring a team of executive engineers or multiple workstreams.
  • Experience navigating ambiguous, open-ended problems and turning them into tractable solutions.
  • Knowledge of full-stack or client-side development, with familiarity in Google's internal stacks (server platform, Soy, Kotlin).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence beyond your direct organization.

Google One is a consumer subscription product offering a premium Google experience anchored on storage for products like Gmail, Drive and Photos.

The Strategic Segments team within Google One is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team focused on expanding the business for key user-segments. In this role, you will be responsible for the technical direction of the products and growth of the team. You will be responsible for shaping the strategy for tailored business generation flows and user experiences in high-priority markets. This is a leadership position requiring a balance of deep technical oversight, strategic thinking, and people management. The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the long-term technical strategy and product goal for user-facing initiatives in strategic segments (e.g., emerging markets, students).
  • Build and scale the engineering organization by hiring, onboarding various talent with varied technical backgrounds.
  • Develop the team through coaching, mentorship, and effective work assignments, fostering career growth and high-performance norms.
  • Collaborate with executive cross-functional leaders (Product Manager, UX, Finance) to align organizational goals and navigate complex technical trade-offs.
  • Advocate engineering excellence and operational health, ensuring the team builds scalable, performant, and maintainable systems.
