Panelists asking personal interview questions in an IIM setting

IIM panels do not run a fixed quiz, but the same themes show up every season. Use this list to prepare for a CAT mock interview and the real personal interview after CAT — then practice aloud under time pressure.

Full process guide: CAT mock interview & IIM PI preparation. Prep timeline: How to prepare for the interview after CAT.

Opening & profile

  • Walk me through your profile / Tell me about yourself
  • Summarize your journey from Class 10 to now in two minutes
  • What should we remember about you after this interview?

Approach: Chronological, specific, ends with why you are here for an MBA — not a resume recital.

Academics (CAT PI favorites)

  • Explain the drop / spike in your marks
  • Why this degree / stream? Would you choose it again?
  • Teach me a core concept from your graduation subject
  • What did you learn from your lowest grade?

Approach: Own the data, give a cause, show learning. Never bluff subject depth.

Why MBA / Why IIM

  • Why MBA? Why now?
  • Why this IIM over others?
  • What will you do if you do not convert any IIM?
  • How does MBA connect to your 5-year plan?

Approach: Goal → skill gap → why MBA is the bridge → why this school’s pedagogy/electives fit. Avoid “I want to be a leader.”

Work experience & projects

  • What was your contribution? Give numbers.
  • Tell me about a failure at work
  • Describe a conflict with a manager or teammate
  • Why did you leave / switch roles?

Approach: STAR with metrics. Own mistakes. Show judgment, not buzzwords.

Current affairs & business awareness

  • Who is the RBI Governor? What is the repo rate?
  • One budget announcement that matters for your industry
  • A recent business story you followed — your view?
  • Issues in your home state

Approach: Facts + a short opinion. Saying “I don’t know” beats inventing.

Stress / guesstimates

  • Estimate X in a city (ATMs, pizza, EV chargers…)
  • Convince me in 30 seconds
  • Rapid-fire on your form details
  • Ethical dilemma with no clean answer

Approach: Structure first, then numbers. Stay calm when interrupted.
